Nero Burning ROM, commonly called just Nero, is an optical disc authoring program for Microsoft Windows by Nero AG, formerly Ahead Software.[1] As of version 6, the program has been a part of Nero software suite.
Nero Linux is a more recent standalone incarnation of Nero Burning ROM that works on various distributions of Linux. Nero Linux does not work on Microsoft Windows and therefore is not included with Nero software suite.
Nero Express, a more simplified edition of Nero Burning ROM targeted for entry-level customers, is also available with Nero software suite. Although Nero Express is not as powerful as the full-featured Nero Burning ROM, it features a more streamlined user interface that appeals most users and offers a much broader range of features than those offered by Windows. Nero Express is also integrated into Nero software suite, especially into OEM editions of this software which lack Nero Burning ROM.
[edit] Image burning
Nero Burning ROM works with a number of optical disc image formats, including the common ISO image and Nero's proprietary NRG file format. Depending on version more formats may be natively supported.
To use more formats, particularly lossless FLAC, Wavpack, and Shorten, it is necessary to install additional program modules. The modules, called plug-ins or codecs, are often freely available. Nero AG sells some video and proprietary audio[2] plug-ins.

[edit] Nero Linux
A Linux port of Nero Burning ROM application, Nero Linux, was announced as a free "upgrade" from the Microsoft Windows version in March 2005.[3] The application replicates most features of the Windows version, and uses the GTK+ graphical toolkit. As of 2008-02-26 a trial version is freely downloadable.
The program's name is intended to be a play on words.[4]
Recording optical media is often known as "burning", while pressed CDs were often referred to as CD-ROMs. The Roman Emperor Nero has sometimes been suspected of setting the Great Fire of Rome. This pun is more obvious in the original German as the German name for Rome is Rom. The program logo is an image of the Roman Colosseum in flames.
